Student Choice test- short fiction

Eric Clapton was your average 46 year old man. He was living the perfect life with his wife, and two kids Ruth and Connor. Ruth was the older sibling, she was always known to be the quiet kid that always stayed out of the way. She was usually never the center of attention, but its okay because that’s the way she liked it. Connor was exactly the opposite. He was extremely upbeat and was always getting into trouble somehow. Connor was the type of kid that it was very hard not to like. He admired his dad and dreamed to be exactly like him when he grew up.
Eric was the guy everyone dreamed to be like. You would always hear people say “Oh I would kill to be Eric”, or “Eric is so lucky”. However, you never know what people’s lives are like behind the scenes. Even though it seemed like Eric had the perfect family, perfect job, perfect car, perfect house, perfect everything. There was a lot people didn’t know about him. A lot of things that would make people realize that he definitely did not have the perfect life.
As time went on he was getting older, which is never easy, and his kids were now 6 and 4 years old. Things were not going good at all and his wife filed for divorce. He was not really surprised that she filed because it was obvious that they were no longer in love.  Eric really wanted to have custody of his kids, but he realized that in most cases the wife gets the better deal. Unfortunately he was right. The divorce was definitely hard for the kids to get used to. It was not a surprise at all though.  Even though Eric knew the divorce was the right choice for him and his wife, he often thought of the past. He was depressed a lot, he didn’t seem to get over the fact that his life is no longer perfect. He didn’t really know what he got till it was gone, which is how it works out in most cases.
Sadly Eric did not seem to improve his depression. It only got worse, and worse. Drinking got the best of him, and it controlled his life. Alcohol made him feel like everything was okay, when in actuality he needed help, but he would never admit that. It didn’t seem like things were going to get better anytime soon. Eric definitely needed a big wake up call.
It was an average spring morning. It was very nice outside, and Eric was lying in his bed depressed as normal. He suddenly heard a knock on the door. This was surprising because he never had visitors, so he looked out the window and saw two cops standing outside the door. He walked over to the door and opened it. Before he could even say anything the two cops asked if they could come inside to sit down and talk with Eric. They told Eric that his 4 year old son Connor died. The cause of death was falling out of his ex wife’s 53rd floor apartment window. At first Eric was in denial.
As time went on Eric realized that his son would not want to see him sitting down like a bum, and doing nothing with his life. So he decided that it was about time to get his act together. Eric wrote a song called “Tears In Heaven” in remembrance of his son Connor. This song was sad, but it made an impact on many people, including Eric himself. This tragic event made Eric realize how life is too short to just sit around and do nothing with his life. Losing his son was a big loss, that will affect him throughout his life, and he would do anything to have his son back.

"Tears In Heaven"
By Eric Clapton

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Friendship song

When i'm with my friends
We always make amends
But sometimes it depends
With the time we spend

It seems like we're always laughing
Even when nothing's happening
Never stop smiling
Even when were fighting

Always a smile on my face
Even when things are out of place
I'm always feeling safe
Security

Never a bad day
That I'd have to say
They are meant to stay
Day after day
