You're Gonna Miss This
By:Trace Adkins

As we were on our drive to school Terry didn’t seem her usual upbeat self, she was “complaining saying “I can’t wait to turn 18”. All she wanted was to be older, and treated older. She didn’t appreciate what she had, and didn’t realize how good she really had it. Me being her mother knew exactly as she felt, sometimes being young isn’t all that great, but it is completely normal to feel this way. As crazy as this sounds, I was once a kid myself.
Day to day Terry dreaded going to her old, crummy looking school, doing homework, and doing other things that older people didn’t have to put up with. She thought that growing up would make all her problems vanish. She said” I’ll make my own money, and I’ll make my own rules”. Unfortunately really didn’t hit her yet.
Days later we were on our morning routine ride to the school. As “I put my car in park out there in front of the school” I told her “I was just like you”, and being a teenager she didn’t care or acknowledge what I had to say. I began to explain to her that she has to start realizing that sooner than you know it your going to be all grown up, and I know for a fact that “you’re gonna miss this; you’re gonna want this back; you’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast”.
Time goes by and Terry graduates, goes to college, gets a job, gets a boyfriend, and         “ before she knows it she’s a brand new bride”, and has kids. She goes from being a laid back kid, to worrying about her job, and kids. If she only took her moms advice as a kid she would have realized how good she actually had it. Now her little children are running around the apartment, and she is a stressed out mom that know realizes how nice it is to be a kid.
As her children grow up she has flashbacks of what her mom said to her, and how she turned her head the other way and did not care at all what she had to say. As she’s driving her two young children to school she begins to tell them “You may not know it now; but you’re gonna miss this”. She hopes that her children will realize the luxury of being a kid, unlike her.

She was staring out that window, of that SUV
Complaining, saying I can't wait to turn 18
She said I'll make my own money, and I'll make my own rules
Mamma put the car in park out there in front of the school
Then she kissed her head and said I was just like you

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Before she knows it she's a brand new bride
In a one-bedroom apartment, and her daddy stops by
He tells her It's a nice place
She says It'll do for now
Starts talking about babies and buying a house
Daddy shakes his head and says Baby just slow down

'Cause You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Five years later there's a plumber workin' on the water heater
Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin', one kid's screamin'
She keeps apologizin'
He says they don't bother me
I've got 2 babies of my own
One's 36, one's 23
Huh, it's hard to believe

But you're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this
You're gonna miss this
Yeah, you're gonna miss this

Song analysis 2, "Stereo Hearts"

My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
[Travie McCoy]
If I was just another dusty record on the shelf Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that (unintelligible, but NOT "... read well, check it") Travie, I can handle that Furthermore, I apologize for any skipping tracks It's just the last girl that played me left a couple cracks I used to used to used to used to, now I'm over that Cause holding grudges over love is ancient artifacts
If I could only find a note to make you understand I'd sing it softly in your ear and grab you by the hands To keep me stuck inside your head, like your favorite tune And know my heart's a stereo that only plays for you
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every note
Make me your radio And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo
[Travie McCoy]
If I was an old-school, fifty pound boombox Would you hold me on your shoulder, wherever you walk [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/stereo-hearts-lyrics-gym-class-heroes.html ] Would you turn my volume up in front of the cops And crank it higher every time they told you to stop And all I ask is that you don't get mad at me When you have to purchase mad D batteries Appreciate every mixtape your friends make You never know, we come and go like on the interstate
I think finally found a note to make you understand If you can hit it, sing along and take me by the hand T' keep me stuck inside your head, like your favorite tune And know my heart's a stereo that only plays for you
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio Turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo
[Bridge]
I only pray you'll never leave me behind (never leave me) Because good music can be so hard to find (so hard to find) I'll take your head and hold it closer to mine Thought love was dead, but now you're changing my mind
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio 'N turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo

In the song “Stereo Hearts” by Travie McCoy, Travie McCoy shifts from how you could be appreciated in a relationship, to being ignored and treated like “a dusty record on the shelf” by using distinctive allegory, innermost imagery, and enlightening characterization to prove that he is looking for a long-lasting relationship. I believe that this guy is trying to express his true feelings towards this girl. He wants her to feel as strongly about him, as he does to her. He is comparing his heart to a stereo, and he is hoping it “beats for you”, meaning the girl of his dreams. He knows that he is in love, and all he wants in life is for her to love him back.
Throughout this song Travie McCoy uses distinctive allegory to show the meaning other than the literal meaning. He wants to show his true love for this girl of his dreams. He states that “My hearts a stereo, it beats for you so listen close”. That is referring his heart to a stereo because a stereo can beat fast, but so can your heart. Throughout the song he wonders “If I was just another dusty record on the shelf / Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else”. He is trying to ask if this girl is going to be there for him or just “play him like everybody else”.
I pictured a lot of imagery throughout the entire song, which made me understand the innermost meaning of the song. He states that “I’d sing it softly in your ear and grab you by the hand”. That proved to me the passion, and devotion he felt toward this girl. The imagery also represents a romantic mood throughout the entire song. Another example would be, “I take your hand and hold it closer to mine” shows how much he really wants to be with this girl.
Characterization is probably the most dominant literary device used in the song. The characterization in the song makes you realize the personality of this guy, which makes the song more romantic. He wonders that “If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that?” which implies the sense of humor that this guy has. He also states to “Make me your radio / And turn me up when you feel low” shows that this guy doesn’t only care about himself, and there is a sensitive side of him.
After analyzing this song I found that its universal idea it trying to imply what true love really is. This means that you will be there for your partner through good times, and bad. By using these three literary devices, it made it much easier to find the true meaning that the artist was trying to state. The true meaning would be that when you love someone you will know that you do, so therefore you will always be there for them .

Song analysis 1, "If I die young"

In the song “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry, The Band Perry uses distinctive symbolism, magnificent imagery, and symbolic simile to prove that you appreciate much more after somebody dies, compared to when they were living. The Band Perry has many hidden meaning behind the song, in which people can comprehend in different ways. There are many literary devices found in this song that bring out what the true meaning really is. Without these devices the song would not make since, and not be as popular as it is on the billboard list. Many like this song just because of the way it sounds, however others listen to the words and think to themselves what the true meaning really is.
The song uses distinctive symbolism in many cases throughout the song. The band Perry states that ““If I die young, bury me in satin, Lay me down on a bed of roses”, roses are considers a symbol of death. However it represents dying peacefully, and actually wanting to die. Also “Sink me in the river at dawn” symbolizes the washing away of sadness, however it could also be interpreted in other ways. When The Band Perry says “Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother”, is referring to Greek mythology because it is said that there is a rainbow bridge that is between the afterlife, and earth. She also states that “And I’ll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom”, white dresses are a symbol of purity.  So, clearly she wants to escape reality, and live in the afterlife.
Symbolic imagery is also used frequently throughout the song. Throughout the song the lyrics are constantly putting images in my head. Sometimes I feel as if I am there with this girl because the lyrics of the song are so descriptive. The Band Perry incorporated many images that have been associated with burial customs since ancient times. She explains to “Sink me in the river at dawn, which was said to be done in ancient times.  She explains that she is “as green as the ring on my little cold finger’, which puts a very distinctive picture in my head.
Lastly, magnificent similes are used throughout the song which compare things using phrases such as “like” and “as”. She compares the color of her ring, to the color of her skin, “I’m as green as the ring on my little cold finger”. She also compares life to death in many points throughout the song. She explains the significance of life and death, and the strong impact they have on people’s lives.
The Song “If I Die Young” The Band Perry uses many literary devices that help understand the true moral of the song. This song is basically stating that when you’re alive you don’t appreciate life, and when you die people realize that they should have listened to what you had to say while you were alive. In other words, you don’t know what you got till it’s gone, so you should savor, and appreciate every minute of your life. The Band Perry also explains death as not something to be afraid of because it happens to everyone, but to treat it as peaceful as possible because you are going to a better place.

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a, bed of roses
Sink me in the river, at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh, uh oh

Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I've had just enough time

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I've had just enough time

And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I've never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand,
There's a boy here in town who says he'll love me forever,
Who would have thought forever could be severed by

The sharp knife of a short life, well,
I've had just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save them for a time when you're really gonna need them, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, well
I've had just enough time

So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls

"Ironic" Alanis Morissette

In the song “Ironic” by Alanis Morissette, Alanis Morissette demonstrates magnificent Irony, descriptive imagery, and distinctive paradox to show that life is ironic in many ways, and sometimes there is not an explanation for everything. Throughout the song the literary device that is used most frequently is irony. The title is even ironic, because the song is named “Ironic”. “An old man turned ninety-eight, He won the lottery and died the next day.”. That is very ironic because most people never even live to win the lottery, and as soon as the old man wins he dies the next day, and doesn’t even get the chance to appreciate, and enjoy the money. Also, “He waited his whole damn life to take that flight, And as his plane crashed down he thought, ‘Well isn’t this nice…’ ” .This quote is ironic because as soon as he gets to take the plane he’s been waiting to take for his whole life it crashes down.
The song “Ironic” also demonstrates descriptive imagery, which really puts a detailed picture in your head of what exactly is going on. Morissette explains “It’s a traffic jam when you’re already late”. She also says “It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife”, this is referring to how life is ironic, and things don’t always work out in the way you want them to. However, you just have to have a good attitude, and never give up. “It’s like rain on your wedding day” makes me picture a cold, rainy, and romantic night.
A lot of Paradox is also shown throughout the song. Alanis says “It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid. If you think about that it doesn’t make any logical since because, if you’ve already paid it’s not a free ride. Also, “It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late”, explains that a person is going to be put to death, and then he gets his death sentence pardoned two minutes after he has already been killed. This whole song explains how life is ironic, however “Life has a funny way of helping you out”.

Our Song

Thesis: In the song "Our Song" by Taylor Swift, Taylor swift uses intresting repetition, and magnificent internal ryme to express the way she is feeling.

"Our Song"
By:Taylor Swift

I was riding shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel
The other on my heart

I look around, turn the radio down
He says, ?Baby is something wrong??
I say, ?Nothing I was just thinking
How we don't have a song? and he says

Our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know

Our song is the way you laugh
The first date man, I didn't kiss her and I should have
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Asking God if He could play it again

I was walking up the front porch steps
After everything that day
Had gone all wrong or been trampled on
And lost and thrown away

Got to the hallway, well, on my way
To my lovin' bed
I almost didn't notice all the roses
And the note that said

Our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
(From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/t/taylor-swift-lyrics/our-song-lyrics.html)
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know

Our song is the way you laugh
The first date man, I didn't kiss her and I should have
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Asking God if He could play it again

I've heard every album, listened to the radio
Waited for something to come along
That was as good as our song

'Cause our song is the slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on his window
When we're on the phone and he talks real slow
'Cause it's late and his mama don't know

Our song is the way he laughs
The first date man, I didn't kiss him and I should have
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Asking God if He could play it again
Play it again, oh, yeah, oh, oh, yeah

I was riding shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
I grabbed a pen and an old napkin
And I wrote down our song

thesis

In " Lucy in the sky with diamonds", The Beatles use magnificent imagery and fantastic symbols that convey that Lucy is not really in the sky with diamonds.
