Song analysis 2, "Stereo Hearts"

My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
[Travie McCoy]
If I was just another dusty record on the shelf Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that (unintelligible, but NOT "... read well, check it") Travie, I can handle that Furthermore, I apologize for any skipping tracks It's just the last girl that played me left a couple cracks I used to used to used to used to, now I'm over that Cause holding grudges over love is ancient artifacts
If I could only find a note to make you understand I'd sing it softly in your ear and grab you by the hands To keep me stuck inside your head, like your favorite tune And know my heart's a stereo that only plays for you
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every note
Make me your radio And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo
[Travie McCoy]
If I was an old-school, fifty pound boombox Would you hold me on your shoulder, wherever you walk [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/stereo-hearts-lyrics-gym-class-heroes.html ] Would you turn my volume up in front of the cops And crank it higher every time they told you to stop And all I ask is that you don't get mad at me When you have to purchase mad D batteries Appreciate every mixtape your friends make You never know, we come and go like on the interstate
I think finally found a note to make you understand If you can hit it, sing along and take me by the hand T' keep me stuck inside your head, like your favorite tune And know my heart's a stereo that only plays for you
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio Turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo
[Bridge]
I only pray you'll never leave me behind (never leave me) Because good music can be so hard to find (so hard to find) I'll take your head and hold it closer to mine Thought love was dead, but now you're changing my mind
[Chorus]
My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-ote
Make me your radio 'N turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you To sing along to my stereo
Oh oh oh oh, to my stereo Oh oh oh oh, to sing along to my stereo

In the song “Stereo Hearts” by Travie McCoy, Travie McCoy shifts from how you could be appreciated in a relationship, to being ignored and treated like “a dusty record on the shelf” by using distinctive allegory, innermost imagery, and enlightening characterization to prove that he is looking for a long-lasting relationship. I believe that this guy is trying to express his true feelings towards this girl. He wants her to feel as strongly about him, as he does to her. He is comparing his heart to a stereo, and he is hoping it “beats for you”, meaning the girl of his dreams. He knows that he is in love, and all he wants in life is for her to love him back.
Throughout this song Travie McCoy uses distinctive allegory to show the meaning other than the literal meaning. He wants to show his true love for this girl of his dreams. He states that “My hearts a stereo, it beats for you so listen close”. That is referring his heart to a stereo because a stereo can beat fast, but so can your heart. Throughout the song he wonders “If I was just another dusty record on the shelf / Would you blow me off and play me like everybody else”. He is trying to ask if this girl is going to be there for him or just “play him like everybody else”.
I pictured a lot of imagery throughout the entire song, which made me understand the innermost meaning of the song. He states that “I’d sing it softly in your ear and grab you by the hand”. That proved to me the passion, and devotion he felt toward this girl. The imagery also represents a romantic mood throughout the entire song. Another example would be, “I take your hand and hold it closer to mine” shows how much he really wants to be with this girl.
Characterization is probably the most dominant literary device used in the song. The characterization in the song makes you realize the personality of this guy, which makes the song more romantic. He wonders that “If I asked you to scratch my back, could you manage that?” which implies the sense of humor that this guy has. He also states to “Make me your radio / And turn me up when you feel low” shows that this guy doesn’t only care about himself, and there is a sensitive side of him.
After analyzing this song I found that its universal idea it trying to imply what true love really is. This means that you will be there for your partner through good times, and bad. By using these three literary devices, it made it much easier to find the true meaning that the artist was trying to state. The true meaning would be that when you love someone you will know that you do, so therefore you will always be there for them .
